For Ginsburgs, global interests are contagious

Her work, first with 3M and then with a commercial law firm affiliation, drew Sue Ginsburg into the international marketplace.

“I have been exposed to and learned a lot about our global economy and doing business with other countries,” says Ginsburg, who now heads GrowthLynx, a Minneapolis marketing firm.  “I love meeting people from other cultures, learning about their cultures, connecting the dots, helping expand business internationally, and figuring out how to successfully do business together.”

As her global affinity grew, she didn’t leave it at the office. She carried her international interests home, into her children’s classrooms and now to the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

“I always spoke to my children about where I was going, and what it was like, always emphasizing there were as many similarities as there were differences,” she says.

Numbers tell story of study abroad at UW-Madison

A significant indicator of the support for international education at the University of Wisconsin–Madison has been the number of students who study abroad each year—a number that has grown 75% in the past decade.

According to Open Doors 2011, the report released Monday by the Institute of International Education, UW–Madison ranked 10th nationally in the number of students who studied abroad in 2009-10, with 2,169. That compares to 1,236 in 1999-2000.

“At UW-Madison, study abroad continues to be an essential high-impact practice that instills a multitude of skill sets for our students, including global competencies, integrative learning, and independent thinking,” says Julie Lindsey, interim managing director of International Academic Programs (IAP) in the Division of International Studies.  “Through these experiences, students are complementing their degree programs and enhancing their career preparation by learning cross-cultural and workplace skills that are of great value to today’s employers.”

In its 2011 Open Doors Report on International Education Exchange, released this week, the Institute of International Education gives high marks to the University of Wisconsin-Madison in two categories.

Nationally, UW-Madison sent the tenth-highest number of students to study abroad during the 2009-10 school year, with 2,169 students pursuing studies in other countries. The university ranks third among producers of mid-length studies abroad and sixth among producers of long-term studies abroad (one year or more).

“At UW-Madison, study abroad continues to be an essential high-impact practice,” says Julie Lindsey, interim director of International Academic Programs. “The cross-cultural and workplace skills that students develop through these experiences — global competencies, integrative learning and independent thinking — are of great value to today’s employers.”
