China Trip Update: Dean Bousquet Reflects on Journey (May 25, 2011)
Gilles Bousquet, dean of International Studies and vice provost for globalization, currently is leading a University of Wisconsin–Madison delegation on a two-week visit to China, aimed at expanding and deepening the university’s connections there. The itinerary includes events and meetings in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Hong Kong, and Beijing. Halfway through the trip, Bousquet reflects on the journey thus far.

Bousquet to Lead UW-Madison Delegation to China (May 13, 2011)
To follow up on Chancellor Biddy Martin’s two visits to China in 2010, a delegation from the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Division of International Studies is traveling there this month to continue the university’s efforts to expand and deepen connections in this important region of the world.

Scholarship Ceremony Honors more than 130 Students Intending to Study Abroad (May 13, 2011)
The Division of International Studies and International Academic Programs (IAP) hosted the 2011 Study Abroad Scholarship Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, April 27, 2011. Gifts from a number of different scholarship funds were awarded to more than 100 students for study around the world. Generous alumni and friends of the Division has made several gifts possible.

14th Annual NCOLCTL Conference Focused on Collaboration, Innovation, and Globalization (April 19, 2011)
The National Council of Less Commonly Taught Languages (NCOLCTL) held its 14th annual conference titled “Building Language Capacity: Collaboration, Innovation, Globalization” in Madison, April 7-10, 2011.Dean and Vice Provost Gilles Bousquet joined researchers and practitioners top give opening remarks.

China Scholarship Council Visits UW-Madison (April 15, 2011)
On Thursday, April 14, 2011, the China Scholarship Council delegation met with UW-Madison campus leaders. The China Scholarship Council provides a special scholarship for the Chinese Champions Program participants.

Post-event Media: UW-Madison Celebrates 50 Years of Peace Corps (March 29, 2011)
Gilles Bousquet, vice provost for globalization, said UW’s African Studies Program has played a significant role in supporting the Corps’ mission on campus. UW is currently the second ranked institution nationally for total Peace Corps recruits, he said, and students’ involvement in the program was one of the first prominent markers of identity he noticed when he arrived on campus.

Zhejiang University President Visits Campus (March 1, 2011)
Wei Yang, president of Zhejiang University, spent February 20-21 on campus, learning more about the school where his parents met in the late 1940s. President Yang’s father, Guang-hua Yang, earned a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from UW-Madison in 1951.

Global Panel to Discuss Education and Competitiveness
Interim Chancellor David Ward will welcome a group of education leaders from around the world to the University of Wisconsin–Madison on Tuesday, July 26 for a panel discussion on these trends and what they mean for the U.S. pre-eminence in higher education.

Tenth Annual Mildred Fish-Harnack Human Rights and Democracy Lecture
The Division of International Studies presented the tenth annual Mildred Fish-Harnack Human Rights and Democracy Lecture on October 15, 2010. The event honored the work of alumni Mildred Fish-Harnack and her husband Arvid Harnack, a graduate student of UW-Madison. The couple pursued humanitarian efforts through active Nazi resistance. Fish-Harnack was the only American civilian executed by direct order from the Fuhrer.

Islam’s View of Other Religions
On October 26, 2010, Dean Aisha Yousuf Al-Mannai, presented “Islam’s View of Other Religions” to a packed lecture hall. Dean Al-Mannai is the current dean of the College of Sharia and Islamic Studies at Qatar University and the first women to assume such a title. The lecture was further evidence of the growing partnership between UW and Qatar University.

Bascom Hill Society Fall Event 2010
Last Friday the University Wisconsin Foundation hosted its annual Bascom Hill Society Autumn Dinner Event, the theme of which was international education, research, and service at UW-Madison. Dean and Vice Provost Gilles Bousquet was the emcee extraordinaire!
