Study Abroad Scholarships

Study abroad has a long-standing tradition of excellence as an integral part of a UW–Madison education. Each year, more than 2,000 UW–Madison students embark on a range of global experiences that have tremendous personal, professional, and academic impacts. UW–Madison consistently ranks among the national leaders in study abroad participation – made possible by professional staff who support students through every step of the process, from finding the right program, to applications, pre-departure preparation, on-site emergency support and advising, and return student services.

Alongside these efforts, we are committed to breaking down the financial barriers so that all students who wish to study abroad can. The Division currently allocates nearly $500,000 per year to scholarships, open to all students, but especially targeting underrepresented groups, such as first-time abroad, first generation college students and STEM majors. To put the Wisconsin idea in action, many scholarship recipients do “give back” projects, sharing their experiences back home.

International Internship Grants

Students today need to develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that allow them to thrive in today’s global marketplace, whether they pursue careers in another country or in Wisconsin. The International Internship Program (IIP) cultivates and helps students find high-quality internships that provide valuable work experience in international settings, and assists employers in recruiting globally competent talent.

Expanding funding support for students and keeping program costs affordable are essential in ensuring accessibility for international internships, especially for unpaid internships. Grants that help cover the costs of travel and overseas accommodations enable more students to participate in enriching international internship opportunities.

Global Engagement Innovation Fund

Accelerating internationalization is among UW-Madison’s strategic objectives. The Global Engagement Innovation Fund enables UW–Madison to respond in a timely manner to pursue new opportunities that expand and enhance international engagement and education in today’s fast-moving environment.
