About the speaker:
Judge Christopher Weeramantry is a world-renowned legal scholar and a former Justice and Vice-President of the International Court of Justice, and a former judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. Judge Weeramantry has received honorary degrees from London University, University of Colombo, Monash University and the National Law School of India. Judge Weeramantry has held visiting professorships in many countries and is the honorary patron of the Center for International Sustainable Development Law, Montreal; President of the International Association of Lawyers against Nuclear Arms (IALANA); and Chairman of the International Chief Justices Working Group on Strengthening Judicial Integrity. He has received many awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Peace Leadership by the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation; UNESCO Prize for Peace Education; the Right Livelihood Award; and Sri Lanka’s highest civil honor – Sri Lankabhimanya – “conferred for exceptionally outstanding and most distinguished service to the nation.”
