Fischer Retires After Nearly 30 Years of Service in Global Higher Education

Maj Fischer, Assistant Dean for International Strategy and Partnerships, retired from the University of Wisconsin-Madison on September 19, leaving behind a legacy of creating connections during an almost 30-year career in higher education.

Maj FischerFischer began her UW–Madison journey in 1996 as Associate Director of International Academic Programs, where she worked to formalize study abroad systems and expand global opportunities for students. During a brief hiatus from UW, Fischer served as Associate Director for the Peace Corps in Fiji. She then served as Program Director, and later as Director of Academics, for the Danish Institute for Study Abroad. She returned to campus as the founding director of the International Internship Program (now a part of International Academic Programs), which has enabled thousands of students to gain professional experience abroad. Fischer also assumed leadership of UW–Madison’s Peace Corps recruiting office, helping the university to become one of the nation’s top annual producers of Peace Corps Volunteers.

Fischer has served in other key roles in UW-Madison’s International Division, including as Director of External Relations, until assuming her current role in 2024. These positions saw her leading a team to facilitate international agreements and partnerships, organize international delegations, and build relationships with community organizations. Her work has strengthened UW–Madison’s global presence and opened doors to new opportunities for students, staff, faculty, and alumni.

“As I reflect on my many years of service to UW–Madison, I feel immense gratitude for the opportunity to help shape the university’s global engagement efforts,” said Fischer. “While the decision to retire is bittersweet, I do so with deep pride in what we’ve achieved together and optimism for the division’s and UW’s future impact.”

Fischer has also been responsible for the Scan Design, Madison Torske Klubben, and Brittingham-Viking scholarship programs, fostering cross-cultural exchange between Nordic countries and Wisconsin.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is grateful for Fischer’s years of service and enthusiasm for international collaboration. Friends and colleagues are invited to share their best wishes and memories on a Kudo Board celebrating her service and retirement!
