November is here, and with it comes one of my favorite times of the year: International Education Week (IEW)! The week is a time to celebrate achievements in international education and exchange, and the activities highlighted on the IEW website showcase the ways that the International Division and our campus partners connect Wisconsin to the world. I encourage you to visit the website and participate in some of the IEW events.
This year, we’re thrilled to kick off the week with outstanding news: UW–Madison has once again been recognized in the Open Doors 2024 Report on International Educational Exchange as a leader in global education:
- #8 in the U.S. for study abroad participation, with a particularly impressive #2 ranking for semester-long study abroad programs.
- #18 in the U.S. for international student enrollment, reflecting the vibrant global community on our campus and our strong international reputation.
These achievements are a testament to our commitment to bridging worlds, boosting innovation, and building leaders with global knowledge and intercultural understanding.
Here are five points of pride to share with your friends and family about UW–Madison’s global reach and international impact:
- Top 10 for study abroad: Badgers are among the most engaged students in the U.S. by virtue of their high participation rates in study abroad programs around the world.
- Top 20 for international students: More than 7,000 international students from 120+ countries call our campus home.
- 8 Title VI National Resource Centers: The most of any U.S. university! These prestigious regional studies centers drive innovative research and outreach that benefits our campus, state, and nation.
- A leader in language learning: Each summer, we offer up to 30 less commonly taught languages through the Wisconsin Intensive Summer Language Institutes (WISLI), making UW–Madison a premier destination for languages from Arabic to Vietnamese.
- Top Peace Corps Volunteer Producer: UW–Madison’s legacy of international service continues, with our Badgers in the #1 position this past year for the number of volunteers sent abroad.
Thank you to everyone—students, faculty, staff, friends, partners, and alumni—who make UW–Madison an outstanding global institution. Your dedication ensures that our campus continues to thrive as a hub of international education and exchange.
