Message from the Dean–October 2024

Frances Vavrus
Frances Vavrus, Dean and Vice Provost of the International Division at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

As we near the end of October, we see classes in full swing with students off and running in Madison and around the world. This is the time of year when the sunny, warm days give way to cooler temperatures, but there’s always something to look forward to at UW–Madison—especially as October signals the return of alumni to campus for Homecoming.

Homecoming at UW is a special time. The Wisconsin spirit shines brightly through students, alumni, colleagues, and community members who gather to rekindle old friendships, forge new ones, and celebrate what it means to be a Badger. In the International Division, we are particularly excited to welcome our Board of Visitors to campus. This distinguished group of alumni brings decades of leadership and experience in global affairs and engagement, and their eagerness to connect with students is truly inspiring. Several board members will be participating in a career panel discussion to share their experiences and offer insights on how students can launch their own professional journeys. We are grateful to these alumni and to all who remain deeply invested in the success of future generations.

During Homecoming, we’ll also see the return of the iconic pink plastic flamingos to Bascom Hill for the annual Fill the Hill event, beginning at 5 p.m. on Oct. 24. I would like to encourage all of our friends and supporters to use this occasion to contribute to the Global Wisconsin Idea Fund, which supports international learning opportunities for students, teachers, and community members across the state. There will be more details coming your way soon on how you can help bring more flamingos to the hill and more global engagement to Wisconsin.

Our dynamic alumni are also supporting our students as instructors and internship supervisors in our Wisconsin in Washington (WiW) program. I had the privilege of speaking to our DC-based Badgers last week at the fall WiW reception, and it was heartening to meet graduates of the program who are now mentors to current students and alums who have opened up their homes and offices to provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for those who are spending the semester far from home.

As the season changes, let’s embrace the spirit of Homecoming and the enduring connections that make UW–Madison such a special place to learn, grow, and celebrate together.
