Jason Jonely, a UW–Madison leader, alumnus, and friend, died unexpectedly due to natural causes on Sunday, August 11, 2024.
Jason was a remarkable individual whose career spanned more than 25 years of dedicated service to the University of Wisconsin–Madison and to the field of international education.
An alumnus of UW–Madison, Jason began his career as a student worker in the School of Education. Following graduation, he accepted a position as an advisor in the International Student Services (ISS) Office. Jason rose to the position of associate director of ISS and worked diligently to enhance the experiences of international students, creating a positive environment on campus and in the community.
Additionally, Jason was frequently called upon to lend his insights to colleagues and his expertise to campus committees as well as to state and national organizations dedicated to advancing higher education for domestic and international students. His contributions to NAFSA (National Association of International Educators) and WAIE (Wisconsin Association of International Educators) will be remembered by his peers.
In 2018, Jason transitioned from ISS to join the International Division Dean’s Office as the inaugural coordinator of the prestigious King-Morgridge Scholars Program. He was a central figure for these bright, young scholars, welcoming them to the university and championing them throughout their undergraduate studies and beyond. Jason was well-known among students and colleagues alike for his wry humor but most notably for his kind-hearted and caring personality. A recent cohort of students began affectionately referring to him as “Uncle Jason,” a moniker that represents the on-campus family that he fostered among the K-M Scholars.
Jason’s family meant everything to him. He is survived by his loving parents, Thomas and Genevieve (Harrigan) Jonely; his brother, Ryan Jonely; his sister, Janna Jonely (Jeremy Jones); and many other relatives and friends who will deeply miss his presence in their lives.
