A message from the dean: Safe travels over the winter break

As the semester comes to an end, you are all no doubt looking toward a well-earned break, travelling to see friends and loved ones. For some of you, the journey may be short—taking you not far from Madison. For UW–Madison’s many international students, faculty, and staff, your travels may require you to cross oceans and borders. To all of our university community, I hope you will prioritize your health and safety wherever you may be heading. However, there is an added layer of caution needed for those travelling to international destinations. Changing conditions associated with the pandemic and border regulations could create difficulties in your plans.

For that reason, I urge you to actively monitor conditions associated with U.S. and destination health agencies, travel restrictions in the U.S. and at your destination, and regulations that may be put in place by airlines and hosts. It is best to monitor resources daily, as changes could occur rapidly, creating difficulties in plans to return to the U.S. In a previous message, the International Division provided guidance on travel during the winter recess. I strongly recommend you review this, as well as some of the resources outlined to make sure you are well-informed.

Above all, I hope you, your family, and friends enjoy a safe and healthy winter recess and holiday season. We in the International Division wish you well and look forward to welcoming you back to campus for the spring 2022 semester.
