‘Blue collar’ UW student wins scholarship to study in England

A UW-Madison graduate focusing on breaking down voting barriers has been selected as one of 43 students in the U.S. to receive the Marshall Scholarship to study in the United Kingdom.

Phoenix Rice-Johnson, a native of Hawaii who was attracted to UW-Madison while taking summer trips to visit her grandparents in Wisconsin, will attend Kings College London in 2018, pursuing a master’s degree in public policy.

She is currently in New York at the Brennan Center for Justice, a nonpartisan law and policy institute at the New York University School of Law, working as a research and program associate, focusing on breaking down barriers that keep marginalized people from voting.
